Scabs & Crusts – What Really Happens with a Tattoo

A fresh tattoo looks vibrant and rich at first—until ascabforms after a few days. Don’t panic: this isn’t a mistake, but an important part of the skin’s natural healing process.

Here you'll learn why scabs form, how to care for them properly, and why patience is key to preserving your tattoo's vibrant color.

🩹 Why scabs form

When you get a tattoo, the top layer of skin is intentionally broken to allow ink to penetrate the dermis (the second layer of skin).

Your body reacts immediately:

  • Blood and lymph dry in the air,
  • athin, protective crust forms,
  • The skin begins to regenerate.

This scab protects the wound from bacteria, retains moisture, and keeps the pigment in place.

💡In short:A scab is a sign that your body is doing its job—everything is going according to plan.

🚫 Why you should never scrape off the crust

Even though it's tempting, don't touch her.

If you pick at the scab, you risk:

  • Color loss:Pigments are removed along with the material.
  • Scarring: The skin may heal unevenly.
  • Infections:Bacteria have an easy time of it.

It's best to let the scab fall off on its own—it usually happens naturally after7 to 14 days.

🌿 How to care for your tattoo during the scabbing phase

Finding the right balance between hygiene and personal care is crucial right now.

Do’s:

  • Clean your tattoo every day with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap.
  • Gently pat it dry (do not rub).
  • Applya very thin layer of SKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Balm or Oil—this can help keep your skin supple and reduce feelings of tightness.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent chafing.

Don'ts:

  • No bathing, swimming, or using the sauna.
  • No thick layers of cream.
  • Do not scratch or try to "help" the scab come off.

💧 What if the scab itches?

Itching is completely normal—your skin is regenerating.

But instead of scratching, you can:

  • Gently tap the spot,
  • chill a bit,
  • Apply a tiny amount ofSKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Oil—this can help relieve the itching.

With a little patience, the itching will go away as quickly as it came.

When will everything be back to normal?

After about two weeks, most of the scab has disappeared. A thin, matte layer forms beneath the crust—known as the"silver skin." It is delicate, but it indicates that the healing process is nearly complete.

Stick to your aftercare routine, stay out of the sun, and keep your skin clean—your tattoo will soon be looking its best.

💬 A scab isn’t a problem—it’s a sign of healing

Scabs and crusts are just part of the process. They act as your skin’s natural protective barrier and ensure that your tattoo heals properly.

In short:

  • The scab protects your tattoo—don't pick at it!
  • Scratching or rubbing can cause pigments to come off.
  • Care for it sparingly, but regularly.
  • SKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Oil& Balm— vegan, Swiss-made, and natural—can help support your skin during this phase.

Just let your tattoo do its thing—it’ll thank you with rich, vibrant colors. 🖤
