FAQs

What is the silver skin that forms after getting a tattoo?

If you already have a tattoo, you know that moment: once the scab falls off, your tattoo suddenly looks milky, almost pale. Don’t worry—your tattoo isn’t ruined. This phase is calledthe “silver skin” stage, and it’s a completely normal part of the healing process.

Here you'll learn what happens during the procedure, how long it takes, and how to properly care for your skin during this time.

🌫️ What exactly is the silver skin?

Thesilver skinis thenew, thin layer of skin that forms after the top crust has fallen off.

It has a slightly matte or shimmery appearance—almost as if a veil were draped over your tattoo.
This is because the skin is still very thin, sensitive, and slightly translucent.

💡 This phase is a good sign: your skin is regenerating and completing the regeneration process.

🧬 Why your tattoo looks so faded right now

During the scab phase, your tattoo often looks colorless, dull, or milky.
This is completely normal and no cause for alarm.

What happens:

  • The new layer of skin reflects light differently—the colors beneath often appear brighter.
  • The pigments are already present in the skin, but they only begin to "shine through" again once the layer becomes thicker and more stable.
  • After about7–14 days, everything will be clear and strong again.

In short: Your tattoo doesn't look faded—it's just temporarily hidden beneath new skin.

🌿 How to care for your tattoo during the scab phase

Right now, your skin needsrest and moistureabove all else—but without overdoing it.

Here's how to do it right:

  • Gently cleansewith lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleansing gel.
  • Drying:Gently pat the area dry; do not rub.
  • Care:A very thin layer ofSKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Balm or Oilcan help soothe the skin and keep it supple.
  • Avoid the sun:No tanning beds, no direct UV radiation.
  • Patience:The silver skin will disappear on its own—please don’t try to peel it off.

💧 What you should avoid

During the "silver skin" phase, the skin is particularly sensitive.

That's why:

  • No scrubs or shower sponges.
  • No products containing alcohol or with a strong scent.
  • No water that's too hot or long baths.

Stick to gentle care, and your tattoo will soon look vibrant again.

When does the membrane disappear?

After about one to two weeks, the silver film will peel off naturally. Once that happens, the surface regeneration will be complete, and the colors will once again shine brightly and vividly.

This is the moment when you see your subject in all its beauty again—without that milky haze.

💬 The silver skin shows that everything is going well

The scab isn't a problem—it's the final stage of skin regeneration. It shows that your skin is healing and your tattoo is well-established.

In short:

  • Silver skin = the natural protective layer that forms after the scab has healed.
  • It will make your tattoo look dull for a short time—that's normal.
  • No scratching, no exfoliation, no sun.
  • SKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Oil& Balm – natural, vegan, Swiss-made – can help gently care for your skin until the colors shine again.

Your tattoo hasn't disappeared—it's coming back stronger than ever. 🖤
