FAQs

Why does a tattoo itch while it's healing?

If your new tattoo suddenly starts to itch, it's not a bad sign—on the contrary, your skin is healing.

Itching is anatural part ofthe healing process, but it can be pretty annoying. Here, you’ll learn why tattoos itch during the healing process, what you can do about it, and what you should avoid so your tattoo stays perfect.

🧠 Why tattoos itch – what’s happening in your skin

When getting a tattoo, the top layer of skin is intentionally broken. As the skin heals, your body begins to produce new cells and replace damaged tissue.

This causes the release ofhistamine —a substance produced naturally by the body that stimulates the healing process but, unfortunately, also triggers itching.

In short:

  • New skin forms, which is sensitive.
  • Color pigments are incorporated, which can cause slight tightness.
  • The scab is drying out, which makes it even itchier.

It's all completely normal—your body is just doing its job.

What you should definitely not do

Even if it's hard:don't scratch it. As tempting as it is, it can ruin your tattoo.

Scratching or rubbing leads to:

  • Loss of color(pigments are shed from the skin).
  • Scarring.
  • Risk of infection.

If you feel the urge to scratch, gently tap the spot insteador distract yourself for a moment—the itching usually goes away after a few minutes.

🌿 What can help relieve the itching

A little care can go a long way—but please be gentle:

Gentle tips:

  • Cooling:Not ice-cold; do not apply ice directly to the skin.
  • Easy care:A very thin layer ofSKULLTRESS™ Tattoo Oilor Balm can help reduce tightness and keep the skin supple.
  • Hydration:Drink plenty of water—dry skin itches more.
  • Let your skin breathe:Avoid tight clothing, especially those made of synthetic fabrics.

With patience and regular, natural care, the itching usually goes away after a few days.

🧴 What you should avoid

A few things just make it worse:

  • Do not rub or scrub vigorously.
  • No creams containing alcohol or perfume.
  • No heavy layers of moisturizer—the skin needs to be able to breathe.

Exercise or a sauna can also make the itching worse during this time, because sweat irritates the skin. So give your skin a break.

🕓 How long does the itching last?

With most tattoos, the itching lastsa few days to a maximum of two weeks.
It goes away as soon as the scab falls off and theskin-healing phasebegins.

💬 Itching is normal—no need to panic

Your tattoo isn't itchy because something is wrong, but because your body is healing.
With gentle care and patience, this phase will pass quickly.

In short:

  • Itching = a sign of healing.
  • Do not scratch or rub.
  • Care for thinning hair withSKULLTRESS™ Oil& Balm – natural, vegan, Swiss-made.
  • In one or two weeks, it will all be over and your tattoo will be ready to shine.

Stay cool—the itch will go away, but the color will stay. 🖤
